Not sure how many active posters can relate to this without them explaining how Sword Art Online to them is what Galactic Heroes is to certain older anime fans (not me, fyi), but at the risk of 'I watched anime for 1-month and have now seen it all, yo' cringe and the like, have you ever watched an anime in a certain genre that was superior in some regard to the rest; killing your interest in other similar shows? Or found yourself just outright losing interest in anime as a whole?

In my case it's more accumulated fatigue having watched waaaay too much, over the years. See one shounen, seen 'em all. See one 'average high schooler' herbivore, seen 'em all. The fun has been killed and my eyes roll. My target demographic is seinen and that, quite simply, is not where money is made by anime studios. Nowadays I watch infrequently and my main friend I used to talk to about anime stopped watching entirely. It gets to a point where seeing teenagers excited makes older anime fans feel... well, old.

But if I had to name anime that stood out and showed me something different, that often isn't a thing in anime, it'd actually be fairly recent shows despite my aversion: Prison School and KonoSuba. It was refreshing to see alpha male attitudes in main characters and self-aware humour that went to vulgar, non-purepure depths. Outrageous parodies rather than more of the same. After watching them and thinking about how few other comedy anime made me laugh at all, it occurred to me anime comedies overall just aren't funny, lack any sharp wit and play it too safe.

...I guess they gave me my 'I've seen all 100 episodes of Galactic Heroes, fuck the rest' moment, rather bizarrely. Another recentish example would be Re: Zero. Despite the critical dislike of it I've noticed and it being another 'transported to another world' series, Subaru's gradual mental collapse as he kept failing, in stark contrast to other far more perfect male fantasy lead's, reminded me of Shinji Ikari. That kind of imperfect, flawed human character is rarely seen in the form of an anime protagonist; similar to Rygart in Break Blade. And realising this once again made me think of how few other anime have that approach.

Anyway, TLTR aside, just curious what, if any, anime had similar impacts on others and why?

No, for me, not really. I enjoy anime, even if they recycle the approach over and over again, I just find myself enjoying it and never getting tired of it. I mean, to this day, after 5 years, I am still an ecchi fan despite my taste increasing ever since then, I've watched/read things like Monster, Oyasumi Punpun and Blame! which are far reach of the ecchi genre.

If they recycle the same beta cock MC again, tbh, at this point, I have grown fondness of this stereotypical protagonist who eats boobs for breakfast. Which I am jealous of I, now, never get tired of it, though, of course, some extraordinary stuff, I wouldn't mind.

Romance is my favourite genre but after Shakugan no Shana, Inu x Boku SS and Zero no Tsukaima every other romance anime feels rather lacklustre in comparison to me.
it hasn't really killed my love for romance but its just Ive noticed that things I would of thought were top tier in the past aren't really that good and I should ask for more

I wont call Kazuma an "Alpha Male" but he also isn't that much of a beta so... yeah.

Back to topic, i dont think i can relate to you like this, maybe because im not that experienced, but probably i think i will reach you point.

I still like my comedy and action, but i dont try to compare then with what i think its better;

Well, at least in terms of harems, you've seem them all just by seeing one. Actually, that goes for most shounens, too.

Anyway, going to the "comedy" part of your thread:
I heard Guruguru and Saiki are funny.

The scene with Darkness where he says "...Yo!" and commands her to wash his back, naked, will stay with me. He basically gives no fucks about rom-com norms: even getting in the bath with the mage girl, calling her gender-protected bluff over using the bathroom before him.

Kiyoshi in Prison School doesn't start as an outright alpha, either... then came the 'dick bottle' saga.

Nope, I've been watching for 20 years and never had a burnout. I do get sick of individual shows sometimes, especially the filler-ridden long ones. If that happens I just drop them or put them on hold and watch some other show.

Yeah, I haven't watched as much as you have, but I feel as thought I'm starting to get to a point where I'm watching simply to get a small dopamine hit when something even slightly peaks my interest. I'm just running through anime, realistically not taking in a lot of it because its just a replica of the anime I watched last week or something. So I fly through the bullshit till I find something novel and can chew on it for awhile, but as I consume anime the high stays around for less and less time until the high fades and I'm back looking for the next hit shifting through the shit.

No, Magilou, I haven't. If anything, I end up wanting more like it, in the long run.

My interest comes and goes depending on my mood. For a while I hung out with people who discussed anime really intensively and in ways I wasn't interested in, and that was too much for me so I did just lose interest in anime as a whole, not because of any particular series but because it was getting to be annoying socially.

But aside from that, sometimes I drift to video games, and sometimes anime.

It sounds like you watched so much anime you became "jaded" about it. I guess either I haven't watched enough to become jaded, or the way I watch things is just weird and see more uniqueness in them for whatever reason, or the things I've watched just so happen to have avoided that somehow. I dunno.

Oh-ho, you can tell I'm jaded be the merest glance at my avatar and words? Aren't you a smart one~ To find someone that understands the greatness of Magilou warms my heart.

But, yes: you watch enough anime and you start to hate existence. Perhaps not the 20years-going-strong guy above but almost certainly those with avatars like my own. A mirror into my soul, it is~

I try to mix up my hobbies, truly, but one day you wake up, see 180 days of anime listed and ponder existence. 'Tis distressing.

I like Evengelion and love Ikkitousen, but fuck Koihime†Musou and Eureka Seven.

...Is that what we're going for here? Liking one thing but not caring about other things that are like the first thing?

Words are confusing.

I've seen people with hundreds days of anime and manga, yet, they didn't watch/read some of the works that I considered to be masterpiece
Not that anyone could, there're literally thousands out there, watching them all is impossible.
My point is, no matter how many you've watch, there alway some seri out there, waiting to blow your mind.

there're several anime/manga that impact me great. They don't focus on 1 genre, but rather raise my expectation bar.

the Monogatari seri for example (start with Bake-monogatari): it set my bar for interesting characters, and dialogues

Another being "The World God Only Knows" manga (the anime kinda screw up the 3rd season): The main character, Keima Katsuragi, is now my definition of Alpha male in anime/manga

Haha.

I've actually not played Tales of Berseria, but I've seen the Zestiria anime series's first season, so that's how I know the character. I wish they made a whole series on Berseria...

I kept watching Zestiria, despite dropping the game for being horribly dull, hoping for more Berseria episodes. FYI, that was not my wisest decision. The ultimate cocktease in anime form, those 2 Berseria episodes.

...Well, if there's ever a character worth playing a JRPG with PS3 graphics for and listening to Tales of skits to hear, Magilou is the one. Her cynical, sarcastic humour and trolling of Velvet is strangely endearing. Playing the fool and mocking everyone~

I like Shounen but after watching my favorite anime many years back, I am not really invested in other shounen anime that much anymore. Its not that I dislike them, just that its kind of impossible for me to like them as much as my favorite anime.

I believe if you like something, you can't have enough of it. You don't need originality because you want them to be similar.
If you don't really like it, then one is enough.

For example I like Oreimo, and therefore I like Saekano, and I like Eromanga Sensei, because I want more anime like that. I won't feel like I've seen Oreimo, so I don't have to watch other otaku harem staff or incest harem staff.

Same case with many other genres, for example if you like Mahou Shoujo anime, you may watch everyone of them and never get tired. But if you are not really into it, then you may only watch the best one and ignore the rest of them because they are all very similar.

I haven't tried the game but I've heard Zestiria's anime version is a better version of the story.

Incidentally I'd hope there'd be more than two eps teasing Berseria because then I could enjoy more Velvet and also get more comfortable with Magilou who didn't really have the time to grow on me yet.

Not only that, but things are a lot less similar once you get into it. Because the similarities are aspects you're familiar with, the differences become more pronounced and more meaningful.

Not really tbh. Closest to what you describe was probably when I watched LOGH back in 2010 and it kinda felt like the peak of the kind of show I was into back then. I lost interest in similar shows that I would compare to it for a while so I ended up branching out and trying out new genres and broadening my taste and it worked very well. Got into romance anime back then for the first time because they're just so different from what LOGH did that there was no way to compare them. It didn't take more than 1 or 2 months maybe until I got over it tho and started being interest in my 'core genre' of, well, LOGH-ish stuff again.

In the end I just realized that there's certain types of shows that I can always enjoy. Certain genres and all the anime tropes associated with them are just my jam and by now I doubt I'll ever get tired of it. But I also do mix up my hobbies. I watch a lot of western TV series as well to get a different kind of storytelling than in anime from time to time and just recently I started getting way more into standup comedy and have been watching a lot of specials whenever I wasn't in the mood for anime.
I probably regret this post by now.

this is probably a controversial opinion but SAO completely KILLED the game-isekai genre for me, even though this show has some terrible plotholes and mistakes it's my favourite anime, and i literally can't enjoy either log horizon or overlord as much as i enjoyed SAO

There is just no going back if you watched Naruto and/or Bleach during your teen years. Similar to Dragon Ball for even older fans. If anything shounen fighting series just regress over time since they don't attempt to be creative; Fairy Tail in particular just being a mish-mash of things done better years ago.

Zestiria butchered what little story there was, changing a lot, towards the end of S2. So, that comment only really applies to S1 and the first half of S2, maybe.

As far as I know those two Berseria eps at the start of S1 were the only ones. I got close to the end of S2 and besides brief mentions of Velvet/Magilou static image from behind... that was it. Zestiria is destined to be disappointing in all regards, I guess.

Thing is, Zestiria is supposed to be set in the same world as a distant sequel to the events of Berseria. It was a total waste of crossover potential not to give Magilou's wonderfully playful voice actress more to work with. OH WELLS.

I'll say this. You know that bullshit asspull in Code Geass where Lelouch lured the enemy into some area and detonated a bomb, conveniently killing all the enemies in the area? Or when he was playing chess and made a losing move that somehow turned into a winning move? All of that came back to me in the first (or second? or third?) episode of Legends of Galactic Heroes, when one of the protagonists and his "Luitenant Zechs" counterpart started moving their ships back and forth and acting like it's because they could read each other's strategies, and I didn't know whether I was supposed to feel like "OMFG Tha'ts so CoOl and DeEp!!!" but it just felt stupid. Stupid enough to drop it and rate it like 3/10.

Yes, I've had moments like that.
I love Seitokai Yakuindomo but despise other shows in the same category such as Hen Semi.
I also tried to follow many semi-interesting anime while they were airing but got burnout and watching Tasogare Otome x Amnesia didn't help much, either.
